LOST: Kayunga

Having an accent can get you in a ton of trouble...

After 8 hours of rafting we were exhausted and planning on meeting some friends in Jinja for dinner. We had our choice of 3 buses to board after rafting so Mark and I went around asking the drivers if one of them could drop us off at the "Ling Ling" roundabout in Jinja.

Unfortunately for us in Uganda "L's" sound just like "R's"...

By the time Christine noticed something was wrong we had traveled 20 miles in the wrong direction. The bus driver was taking us to the "Ring Ring" roundabout in Kampala and we were now 40 miles from Jinja. We asked the driver to stop and he refused thinking we were tourists and worried we might get lost. We gave him the "let us off the bus now look" and let him know that we all lived in country and knew our way around... most of the time...

Within minutes we found an empty taxi and agreed to over-pay him $20 to take the 4 of us 40 miles back to Jinja. We showed up at 7:45 PM for a 5:00 PM dinner... not bad when your using African Standard Time.
