Eid ul-Fitr...

All week long we have been watching the moon to figure out the end of Ramadan... I was seriously praying that it would end on Wednesday or Thursday so it wouldn't get in the way of our trip to Bulgaria... so when the people started shouting at 8 PM last night as it was announced that today would be the end of fasting I was pretty disappointed...

Even more disappointing was that I didn't need to watch the moon... apparently Allah communicates with Wickipedia and they knew the date in advance... and the date for 2009... September 21... make sure to mark your calendars...

Now this doesn't completely destroy our plans for traveling to Bulgaria... just a speed bump in the road...

Eid ul-Fitr "festivity to end the fast" is another one of those spontaneous national holidays with only 24 hours notice much like the death of a king... which means all banks, schools and government offices are closed for the day... so while we planned to have the boys in school so they wouldn't freak out while we packed... instead we have had Kadin marching around the house wear rain boots and pushing around his Buzz Lightyear carry-on bag... asking if it's time to leave every 3 minutes...

It will also make things exciting since our first flight is on Egypt Air... the majority of Egyptians are Muslim and after 40 days of fasting and no beer the parties are known to be a little over the top... so we could have a drunk pilot or control tower operator when we land... yes, I am an optimist!

So it's 7:42 PM and we head off to the airport at 1:30 AM... 3 flights, a 3 hour bus ride and 24 hours+ of travel have the potential for some great blogging... stay posted and we'll let you know if we're alive when we land!
