Blue Jean Friday's...

Ugandans are very professional when it comes to getting dressed for work... "looking smart" is the goal of any professional looking to make an impression at work... our former Librarian was no exception...

Monday through Thursday she dressed smart... but everything changed on Fridays... on Fridays Betty always showed up in blue jeans and a t-shirt... which is extremely uncommon in Uganda...

Now I am probably the last guy to be nominated for the cover of GQ... so rather than asking her to keep her professional appearance 5 days a week... I encouraged the rest of the staff to join her in what eventually evolved into Blue Jean Friday's...

Betty ended up getting an offer from Gulu University that she couldn't refuse last December and Blue Jean Friday's eventually disappeared... but this last week we held a blue jean revival... as we shifted classes and offices around...

For the last month two staff members have been without an office... hopping from open desk to open desk and at times working in the lobby... with more new staff on the way in May we decided to transform a small classroom into an office for 3-4 staff and rent a classroom from Africa Renewal Ministries...

Students and staff pitched in as we loaded my Landcruiser and transferred 40 desks into our new classroom... which happens to be right next to our new campus... we are getting closer!

The classroom looks great and the students were excited to see the changes taking place...although there were a few lost students this week who must have missed the announcement... everyone eventually made it to class...

The move didn't take very long... by 9:15 AM we were finished... proof that somethings do happen early in Africa... so the staff spent the rest of the day wrapping new books for our library... getting over 500 new books on the shelves in one day...

I'm thinking that Blue Jean Fridays are about to make a comeback...
