Weekend in Rwanda

Last weekend I had the opportunity to attend the wedding of Rukundo Rogers... one of our pioneer students... in Kigali, Rwanda.

It was such an encouragement to spend time with our Rwandan alumni and see how well they were all doing. Rogers is one of five former students who is pastoring in a country where they say that less than 95% of the pastors have been through any formal training.

The wedding celebration was so fun to watch as the church was filled with hundreds of people singing and dancing (seriously dancing) as they watched their pastor get married. Five members of Rogers pioneer class also traveled to Rwanda to attend the wedding.

I also got the opportunity to hang out with another alumni and former staff, Olivier Musifiri. Olivier took some biblical counseling classes at ARCC while he was working on his BA in Finance. He went on to work at ARCC as a Finance Assistant. When he was recruited to work for the UN a year ago I was disappointed to see him leave staff but seeing the work that he is now doing in Rwanda with UNIFEM mad it clear that he is truly using his God given gifts and abilities.

On Saturday they gathered a number of alumni together for a reunion. It was fun to spend time talking and catching up with all our former students. Many could hardly speak English when they first came to ARCC and now they are speaking with confidence and using their training to build up the church in Rwanda.

The whole weekend was a reminder of how all the struggles with accreditation, land, staffing and building a university campus are worth it. To know how much their years at ARCC changed their lives was enough to convince me to spend more time reaching out to our alumni to see what God is doing through them... it is some of the best encouragement I can hear!
